Powerful plant oils to ease menopause

Too often, as we rush around in our daily life, we overlook the power and pleasure that scent can bring. I have dedicated most of my life to understanding the power of plant oils and their positive effects on our senses and wellbeing. The connection our sense of smell has with our subconscious is profound and never ceases to amaze me. When I am choosing oils to make a blend, I always start by looking at how the oil will affect our emotions.

A calmer more relaxed state of mind goes a long way to help us face whatever life brings.

This is all the more important for women during perimenopause, menopause and beyond. I am at the “beyond” stage and have used natural plant oils to get me though some of the most testing symptoms.

1. Anxiety

For me, anxiety is the most difficult and the hardest to understand. Menopause seems to bring it in waves when you least expect or want it.  The oils I use for stress and anxiety are Bergamot, Vetiver, Orange and Jasmine and Lemon.

Firstly, to lift the sprits, there is nothing quite like Bergamot.

Wonderfully refreshing, with a citrus and floral undertone, Bergamot always helps me to relax and “let go” a little.

Vetiver is my number one oil to relieve stress, to feel calm, relaxed, to aid sleep and to be at one with the world.

In addition, because it comes from the root of a grass, it is a wonderful oil to make you feel grounded and balanced. 

For this very reason, I have chosen this oil in most of my FLORA + FIONA botanical oils -  In my Facial Oil, my Velvet Skin Body Oil and my REST oil so that it can become part of a soothing and relaxing ritual. 

Vetiver is known as the oil of tranquility. It can bring a deep sense of calm. It also has cooling properties and is used in India to alleviate fevers. This makes it helpful in cooling sprays during hot flushes in the menopause.

Jasmine is an exotic oil with an intoxicating aroma. – It helps you to love yourself and everyone else! Combined with the sunshine oil of Orange, it is very cheering on even the greyest of days.

2. Hot Flushes  

Hot Flushes creep up on you and can be relentless. They have a habit of arriving at a moment of optimum embarrasment.  To cool down and keep calm, I resort to my all time favourites: Rosewater and Dr Hauschka’s Facial Toner.

Rosewater is inexpensive and both calming and cooling.  Just make sure it is natural and that it has the botanical name on the ingredients (rosa damascena) Neals Yard do a lovely natural rosewater. Keep it in the fridge and decant it into a smaller spray, (buy the empty bottles in pharmacies) and bring with you wherever you go. (I keep one in the car too)  Spritz your neck area (particularly the back of your neck) to accelerate the cooling effect.   I sometime add 2 drops of peppermint oil into the rosewater which works well.  If you want to buy one ready to go, Dr Hauschka’s Facial Toner smells divine and is my favourite cooling spritz.

3. Lack of sleep

Sleep patterns become complicated during all stages of the menopause and waking up at 4am with a racing mind is very stressful. Throw in a night sweat and you are WIDE awake.

The oils I use to help with sleep problems are Frankincense, Lavender, Red Orange, Vetiver, Orange blossom.

The first thing that has to be done is to help with the the over thinking and frazzled mind.

Frankincense the oil I turn to first. It is very powerful oil. I love the way it calms the mind and clears the head. This ancient and mystical oil has the ability to both relax and revitalise, perfect to alleviate nervous tension and exhaustion. It is one of the oils I use a lot and and will go to in times of stress and anxiety especially when it is hard to switch off after a tough day. It is a key ingredient in my REST rollerball oil which I made to prepare for sleep. Just roll it on a breathe in the powerful calming aroma.

A quick fix if I feel anxious, I put 2 drops of Frankincense and 2 drops of Orange on a tissue – and breathe in during the day. I also leave the oil infused on a tissue by my pillow. Add a drop of lavender oil too as the three oils work well together.

Creating an aromatic space around you where you can breathe in the natural soothing fragrance of these powerful oils can make all the difference.
