Ditch the diet – just Get Moving
Movement is more important than diet in maintaining good post-menopausal health, according to a new study.
Movement more important than diet?
A group of researchers looking at the effects of exercise in post-menopausal woman monitored 400 post-menopausal women over a year. Half of them undertook the universal health recommendation of most government s- of 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of exercise a week, the other half undertook double that time – 300 minutes (5 hours) a week.
The research findings were recently published in the American JAMA Oncology Journal: the heavy lifters who doubled the recommended exercise load had significant reductions in weight and body fat compared with their more sedentary sisters.
The exercises for both groups included walking, running, and elliptical training and cycling, but not weight training.
Given that post-menopausal weight gain and body fat - which sneaks on almost unnoticed – puts women at increased risk for breast, kidney, and other cancers, the message is clear: Get Moving. More. No excuses.
